Inclusive Education Month Contest Winner!

CLKD

February was Inclusive Education Month. To celebrate and recognize inclusive learning environments, Community Living Kincardine & District invited educators and their classes to share how they create inclusive learning environments for their chance to win a pizza party!  We had a bunch of great submissions!

-        Heather Weber’s Grade 4 class at Huron Heights participated in a variety of activities with the goal of getting students to think, act and play with inclusion in mind so everyone feels welcome and included in all of the activities they do.

-        KDSS created a bulletin board for outside of the resource area that highlights the benefits and importance of neurodiversity in the world.

-        Miranda Graham’s Grade 6 class at Huron Heights participated in activities to bring awareness and understanding to the negative impact that words, stereotypes and prejudgement can have on individuals’ lives.

-        Mrs. Nancekivell's Grade 4/5 class at St. Anthony's conducted an accessibility inspection around their school.

We are thrilled to announce the winning class for this year's Inclusive Education Month Contest is Huron Height's Grade 5 Class taught by Kirsten Ryan!

This classroom showed many efforts to create an inclusive, welcoming environment. They:

- Completed an ASL course to improve communication for all students

- Created a collaborative art project focused on helping those with anxiety feel included by providing strategies on how to cope

- Created a quiet lunch, reading, art and colouring club that offers a soft-lit, peaceful alternative to the loud lunch room

- Had an inclusion based show and tell that fostered kindness and empathy from all students

- Built a classroom board that includes daily updates for students who may not hear or recall announcements

- Created of a suggestion box where students can submit ideas to improve school inclusivity

We were so impressed with the dedication to inclusion that this class has not only in February, but all year round, that these inclusion champions will be receiving a pizza party!

Congratulations to all of the amazing inclusive classrooms and thank you to all those who entered the contest!
